Carlos Santana is learning that it's not just his music that makes a strong impression. The guitar legend was among those celebrated over the weekend as a Kennedy Center Honors recipient.
The New York Times says at Sunday's tribute concert President Obama admitted he was "a little disappointed" with Santana's more conservative wardrobe choice, because "back in the day" Santana's shirts could be seen "from space."
Honoree Billy Joel received a salute from another music superstar -- country great Garth Brooks. Brooks described the respect others have for Joel, recalling that Paul McCartney traveled to New York just to perform with Billy at Shea Stadium, and "that's a freaking Beatle."
A number of stars and other dignitaries were on hand to salute the 2013 Kennedy Center Honorees, which also included Herbie Hancock, Shirley MacLaine, and opera singer Martina Arroyo. Secretary of State John Kerry, Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor, and actress Anna Kendrick are among those who paid tribute to the honorees.
The recipients were celebrated with events in Washington, DC throughout the weekend. They were the guests of honor Saturday at a State Department Dinner, where they received their medallions. The Kennedy Center Honors concert took place Sunday night. Highlights from the gala will air as a special on CBS on December 29th.
